Grief and Loss Counselling in Carleton Place and Across Ontario
A gentle, supportive space for what hurts
When loss touches your life, the world can feel unfamiliar and heavy. There are days when getting through feels impossible, and moments when the pain seems too much to carry.
At Brightspace Psychotherapy we believe grief does not have an expiration date. Every loss is significant, every tear is valid, and your pain deserves patience, care, and attention. Whether you are looking for in-person therapy in Carleton Place or secure virtual counselling anywhere in Ontario, you do not have to carry this weight alone.
Understanding the Many Shapes of Loss
Grief is not limited to physical death. It arrives whenever something meaningful is altered or taken away. We offer therapy for:
- Bereavement & Death: Mourning the loss of a parent, partner, child, sibling, friend, or companion animal.
- Anticipatory Grief: The ongoing sorrow experienced while caring for a loved one navigating terminal illness, cancer, or cognitive decline.
- Ambiguous Loss & Relationship Changes: Mourning relationships altered by estrangement, divorce, dementia, or chronic illness where closure is absent.
- Pregnancy & Reproductive Loss: Carrying the silent, often invisible heartbreak of miscarriage, stillbirth, or fertility struggles.
- Life Transitions & Identity Shifts: The disorientation of career burnout, retirement, health diagnoses, or sudden life changes.
- Cumulative & Disenfranchised Grief: Losses that go unrecognized by society or compound one after another before your nervous system has time to heal.
A Therapist Who Understands the Territory of Loss
Chandan’s Story
Chandan became a Registered Psychotherapist because she has walked this path herself.
In 2003, while living in Toronto, Chandan lost her mother after being her primary caregiver throughout her cancer—leaving a grief that felt deeply profound and isolating. Later in Ottawa, Chandan experienced a pregnancy loss at 8 weeks—a tender, often unacknowledged loss that left its own lasting imprint.
These experiences didn’t just shape her life; they defined the foundation of Brightspace Psychotherapy. They proved that:
- Grief has no set timeline: True healing cannot be rushed or scheduled.
- Grief is non-linear: It can feel quiet one morning and strike like a tidal wave the next.
- Your pain deserves acknowledgment: Even when those around you don’t know what to say.
- Connection eases the burden: Shared pain carried in a safe container softens the isolation.
How We Tend to Grief Together
Therapy is not about “fixing” you or erasing what you lost. It is about creating emotional safety so you can process what is here.
1. Honouring Your Pace
No masks, no expectations, and no rush to “find closure.” We meet you exactly where you are—whether you arrive with tears, anger, numbness, or silence.
2. Somatic & Nervous System Support
Grief lives in the body. It can manifest as physical tightness, fatigue, shallow breathing, and brain fog. We introduce gentle regulation and grounding tools to help your nervous system handle the physical weight of sorrow.
3. Integration, Not Erasure
Healing does not mean forgetting. Together, we explore ways to carry forward the love, memory, and significance of who or what was lost, while gently rebuilding a life where peace and sorrow can coexist.
